AI for Science Program
Applications are open for the AI for Science program at AIMS South Africa.
Prerequisites
To be eligible to apply, you must:
- Be a resident in Africa at the time of application (this does not apply to students displaced by war)
- Be a citizen of any African country
- Have completed a four-year undergraduate degree, or a three-year undergraduate degree with an honours year by August 2025
- For southern African applicants, completion by December 2025 is accepted
- Not have held a previous scholarship to study at an AIMS centre
Your undergraduate degree may be in physics, mathematics, statistics, computer science, engineering, or any other discipline with a strong computational and mathematical component.
In the French LMD system, the equivalent qualification is an M1 year.
Application Timeline
Applications for the 2026–27 academic year open in December 2025.
The selection process takes place in two rounds.
Online Selection Round
Register at https://apply.aims.ac.za and upload the following documents before 11:59 PM on 6 March 2025:
- Curriculum vitae
- Motivation letter of around 500 words
- Academic transcripts
- Representative examples of work in the mathematical sciences (as specified on the application site)
- Coding problem (available on the application site)
The online application is not an exam. The questions are designed to give the selection panel insight into how you approach problems. Applications cannot be completed at the last minute, and early submission is strongly encouraged.
Interviews
The final round consists of short online interviews, scheduled for May 2026.
